Books and Videos

Books–

This year I am going to ask you to allow me to purchase your books. The last 2 years have been a nightmare regarding books for several reasons.

  • Often times when you go to order the book you accidentally order the wrong version. This happened a quite few times last few years and it actually was a huge pain in the neck.  We have also had times where everyone is reading a slightly different story. It doesn’t work out well.
  • Other times when I go to actually teach the book, half of the class hasn’t ordered the book yet (despite me reminding them repeatedly). Which makes it difficult for the student and for class discussion. I have also had parents order the book so far ahead of time that they have forgotten where they placed it!!! I totally relate to this!!! Last year I lost my first copy of Hamlet with all my teaching notes!!! 😦

So this year, I am going to just order the books for you. I will get them for a discounted price. This will guarantee that you get the correct book, a good price, that they arrive on time, and they do not get lost.

Videos–

This year we are also going to watch some movies that relate to the themes and content of the class. Some of the film clips are free on YouTube. But I will ask you to “rent” or purchase some of the other ones to watch at home with your children. Amazon and Google allow you to rent movies for reasonable prices. You can then watch them on the computer (or if you know how to connect it to the TV go for it!)

Some of these movies are so good, you might want to consider purchasing the DVD’s instead of just renting them. You don’t have to, but I LOVE movies like this and would rather spend $8.00 on a DVD I can enjoy for years to come, than $3.00 on a rental I can only see once or twice. It is totally up to you.

I will keep the price of video rentals below $15.00 for the year. If you would like to save even more money, you can meet together with other families for viewing and watch it that way. Or if it works out I can set up a time to show the movie (during the week) and you can watch it for free.

Because of the breadth of the material we are covering this year, and because of the ages of the students, I need to do everything I can to make sure the content is understandable and meaningful. Thank you for helping do this, while I keep the cost to your family as minimal as I can.

I do not have a complete list of films yet, but here is my tentative list:

  • The Importance of Being Ernest
  • The Picture of Dorian Grey
  • To Be Announced . . .

  1. Hello! I see that you have “Morning Star” as the first book the class will be reading, but it is not on this list. It is on the World History list though. Could an Amazon link be provided for the World History books too? Thanks~~ Denetta

    1. Hi Denetta,

This page is only a list of books for purchase. We are going to read other books in class too, but I am not providing a link for you to purchase them because they are free online. So what will happen is, during the week or weeks that we are reading those books, I will provide a link to the website where the kids can read it for free. This page only lists the books that you actually need to order for the class. Does that make sense?

      1. Maybe also, ask Kim for a list of World History books. I am not sure which books she is planning to use for her class. Usually, we are pretty much on the same track, since our classes go together. But go ahead and check with her to see if there is anything else you need to purchase for her class.
