Week 1 At Home–Creation, Giants, and The Flood

This week we begin our journey together, with Genesis chapter one, verse one.

It is the most famous line of all literature– “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

It is so simple, so matter of fact. And the more we learn about science, the more we see that the world around us and inside of each of our cells is anything but simple. Our universe is so complex and intricate. Life is a miracle.

This week you are going to read through Genesis chapters 1-8. You will also read different flood stories from around the world. We will talk a little bit about the giants (Nephilim) that are so controversial in Genesis, and read what Pastor Chuck Smith had to say about them (crazy stuff). We will read from an ancient Hebrew book called The Book of Enoch. And we will watch three short videos in a series called The Fuel Project: Know Your Enemy.  Kim and I are going to use a few of them as part of our ancient civilization unit. The first video is an introduction to the series, as you will see this series begins with Adam and goes all the way through to the end of time. It is a pretty interesting series, and I am not sure I agree with every single point they make, but the parts that I am going to assign are common knowledge. The other parts can be a little conspiratorial, and you may like that, or you may not. 🙂

Assignments This Week: (Your Homework is Due Thursday Night at 10 pm in my email inbox)

I have organized your assignments into manageable daily chunks. But I want to let you know that this year, I am going to have you email more of your homework to me on Thursday nights. I think this will help me manage your work easier. Please save my email address (I don’t want to put it on the blog), but you have it in your paperwork. When you turn in your work to me, please enter the title of the blog it is for in the subject line. For example–for this week’s homework you will put “Week 1–Creation, Giants, and the Flood” as the subject. Please write your name in the email too. Thank you!!!

At some point this week answer the five “Ozymandias” questions and email them to me 🙂

  • Read Genesis 1-4
  • Begin Vocabulary work —- I am going to try a new free vocabulary program this year 🙂 What I need you to do is to go to this link and join my class (join class). It is super easy. From there you can access all of our vocabulary lists each week. I would like you to learn the spelling and definition of each word, using the spelling be and practice questions. Then we can have random quizzes in class so that I know you are doing your work. So let’s try it out this week–Please study the spelling and definitions of these vocabulary words (September Vocabulary: Creation, Mythology, and Literary Terms) Leave a comment below if you are having problems with this website 🙂
  • Journal 1– Please write about how you have seen the enemy trying to deceive people into rebellion against God. You can talk about social issues or things that have affected you personally, or your friends or family.  You need to write about this topic for 15 minutes without stopping, no matter what pops into your head. (We will only have one journal this week)
  • Read “The Lie of the Serpent” (scroll down)

  2. Look up the word “giant” in the blueletterbible. What other stories in the Bible mention giants?
  3. What scientific evidence do we have of a global flood?
  4. Which flood story did you find the most interesting and why?
  5. What was the lie that Satan promised Eve, would come by eating the fruit?
  6. What is the difference between the Bible and the Book of Enoch?
  7. What do you think that people thought of these giants that were not fully human? Write a good paragraph explaining what you would think of them if you were alive in that day.

Below you can scroll through your reading selections for this week:

The Lie of the Serpent

(image from google)

Read Genesis 3.

“For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

verse 5

You will be like God . . .

King James Version— “And ye shall be as gods”

Do you know that this lie is still flooding all false religions? From the Ancient Civilizations thinking they can become gods, Kings being worshiped as deities, and the New Agers believing they ARE gods. Even the Mormons believe that they can one day be the god of their own planet.

But Satan wants us to think that we can become as the Most High. That we can decide for ourselves what is good and what is evil. That we don’t need rules, right or wrong, religion–we can make up our own religion. “Eat the fruit.”

This is where Satan gave humanity the first choice to follow false doctrine. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.” (verse 6).

What did it do? It left them naked and far from God.

Why did Satan tell them that rebellion was going to make them like God?

Because that was the lie that he believed . . .

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit.

Isaiah 14:12-15

This is what it comes down to, as you will see in the next couple of weeks. There is a war in heaven between God and the devil.

I hope those photos above are fake. Yikes!!! they are terrifying!!!!

Here is a giant femur bone from a museum in Texas. Apparently this one is not a fake (below).

Pastor Chuck Smith on the Nephilim

After you have read through Genesis, and watched the videos above I want you to go back and reread Genesis 6. Now read what Chuck Smith has to say about it 🙂

Who are the sons of God? Now there are those who will make the sons of God the descendants of Shem. So they are Shemites, say some. The daughters of men were the Cainites, the descendants of Cain, according to the theory. And that the godly line of Shem began to intermarry with the ungodly line of Cain. And the product -it’s hard to explain how it was giants, but that’s the theory.

The term “sons of God” in the Old Testament is used elsewhere but only of angels, never of man. In Job, the sons of God were presenting themselves to God and Satan also came with them, angels. It would appear that these are angels here in Genesis, that they actually began to intermingle and intermarry. You say but wait a minute. Jesus said the angels neither marry nor are given in marriage in heaven. That is true. But Jesus did not say that they were sexless; He just said there was no marriage nor given in marriage. And it is interesting that always angels are referred to in a masculine form.

There are difficulties with this verse, if you try to make it the godly line of Seth and the ungodly line of Cain. There are also difficulties if you try to make it angels intermarrying with man. But in verse four.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown (Gen 6:4).

Some kind of a super race of giant men as a result of this.

In the New Testament, we read that those angels, which kept not their first estate are reserved in the chains of Tartarus awaiting the day of judgment (Jude 1:6). It seems that there were certain angels, perhaps, that did not keep the first principle or first estate. Maybe they were these angels who came down and began to intermingle and intermarry with men. There are a lot of interesting things that we don’t know all of the answers to, this being one of them. (Chuck Smith, Study Notes)

These giants are called Nephilim. Next week I am going to have you read a story about a famous one named Gilgamesh.

The Book of Enoch

But this week, I want you to read another famous old text. This is from the book of Enoch. THIS IS NOT SCRIPTURE!!!! This is an ancient text, that is part of Hebrew history. Jesus referred to it, and Jude quotes from it, when he refers to the Nephilim in the Bible. But it may serve to give you some knowledge of what the Jewish people thought about the giants and the Nephilim throughout their history. I just don’t want you to put it on the same level as God-breathed, Infallible, Goodness of the Word of God. Consider it IN LIGHT of Scripture. Compare it to the Bible, and then ONLY trust the Bible.

1 And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto 2 them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men 3 and beget us children.’ And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: ‘I fear ye will not 4 indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.’ And they all answered him and said: ‘Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations 5 not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.’ Then sware they all together and bound themselves 6 by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn 7 and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And these are the names of their leaders: Samlazaz, their leader, Araklba, Rameel, Kokablel, Tamlel, Ramlel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, 8 Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens.

[Chapter 7]

1 And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms 2 and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they 3 became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed 4 all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against 5 them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and 6 fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

[Chapter 8]

1 And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all 2 colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they 3 were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings, ‘Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal (taught) astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven . . .

[Chapter 9]

1 And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being 2 shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth. And they said one to another: ‘The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their cryingst up to the gates of heaven. 3 And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, “Bring our cause 4 before the Most High.”‘ And they said to the Lord of the ages: ‘Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the 5 ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages! Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all 6 things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee. Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which 7 men were striving to learn: And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the 9 women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. And the women have 10 borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness. And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are 11 wrought on the earth. And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.’ (Book of Enoch)

Below is the verse where Jude quoted from the book of Enoch, in the Bible

Jude 1:14-15, quoting Enoch 1:9 {2:1} [1]

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
“To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches, which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Jude also mentions angels that sinned and are being reserved in chains for the day of judgment:

And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day” (verse 6).

We will talk about giants a little more next week when we look at Gilgamesh.

Now, let’s look at the flood 🙂

A Global Flood

(image from google)

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and the eyes and that every imagination and the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them (Gen 6:5-7).

Go ahead and browse through these flood legends from all over the world. It is insane. Go ahead and leave a comment below with the story that tripped you out the most.

Worldwide Flood, Worldwide Evidence

When the Bible refers to a worldwide Flood in Genesis 7–8, that’s exactly what it means. Not local, not metaphorical, not some crazy dream—the waters covered the whole earth. Don’t just take our word for it, though. Take a look at the evidence right beneath your feet.

Evidence 1: Fossils of sea creatures high above sea level due to the ocean waters having flooded over the continents

We find fossils of sea creatures in rock layers that cover all the continents. For example, most of the rock layers in the walls of Grand Canyon (more than a mile above sea level) contain marine fossils. Fossilized shellfish are even found in the Himalayas.

Focus in: High & Dry Sea Creatures

Evidence 2: Rapid burial of plants and animals

We find extensive fossil “graveyards” and exquisitely preserved fossils. For example, billions of nautiloid fossils are found in a layer within the Redwall Limestone of Grand Canyon. This layer was deposited catastrophically by a massive flow of sediment (mostly lime sand). The chalk and coal beds of Europe and the United States, and the fish, ichthyosaurs, insects, and other fossils all around the world, testify of catastrophic destruction and burial.

Focus in: The World’s a Graveyard

Evidence 3: Rapidly deposited sediment layers spread across vast areas

We find rock layers that can be traced all the way across continents—even between continents—and physical features in those strata indicate they were deposited rapidly. For example, the Tapeats Sandstone and Redwall Limestone of Grand Canyon can be traced across the entire United States, up into Canada, and even across the Atlantic Ocean to England. The chalk beds of England (the white cliffs of Dover) can be traced across Europe into the Middle East and are also found in the Midwest of the United States and in Western Australia. Inclined (sloping) layers within the Coconino Sandstone of Grand Canyon are testimony to 10,000 cubic miles of sand being deposited by huge water currents within days.

Focus in: Transcontinental Rock Layers

Evidence 4: Sediment transported long distances

We find that the sediments in those widespread, rapidly deposited rock layers had to be eroded from distant sources and carried long distances by fast-moving water. For example, the sand for the Coconino Sandstone of Grand Canyon (Arizona) had to be eroded and transported from the northern portion of what is now the United States and Canada. Furthermore, water current indicators (such as ripple marks) preserved in rock layers show that for “300 million years” water currents were consistently flowing from northeast to southwest across all of North and South America, which, of course, is only possible over weeks during a global Flood.

Focus in: Sand Transported Cross Country

Evidence 5: Rapid or no erosion between strata

We find evidence of rapid erosion, or even of no erosion, between rock layers. Flat, knife-edge boundaries between rock layers indicate continuous deposition of one layer after another, with no time for erosion. For example, there is no evidence of any “missing” millions of years (of erosion) in the flat boundary between two well-known layers of Grand Canyon—the Coconino Sandstone and the Hermit Formation. Another impressive example of flat boundaries at Grand Canyon is the Redwall Limestone and the strata beneath it.

Focus in: No Slow and Gradual Erosion

Evidence 6: Many strata laid down in rapid succession

Rocks do not normally bend; they break because they are hard and brittle. But in many places we find whole sequences of strata that were bent without fracturing, indicating that all the rock layers were rapidly deposited and folded while still wet and pliable before final hardening. For example, the Tapeats Sandstone in Grand Canyon is folded at a right angle (90°) without evidence of breaking. Yet this folding could only have occurred after the rest of the layers had been deposited, supposedly over “480 million years,” while the Tapeats Sandstone remained wet and pliable.

Focus in: Rock Layers Folded, Not Fractured

What now?

The Bible’s history is reliable throughout—from the creation of man from the dust of the ground to the worldwide Flood to the coming of Jesus Christ. But just reading the evidence isn’t enough. The message of salvation founded in the Bible’s history is also true, and, God wants us to accept the gift of salvation He freely offers us.

The evidence is real. God has revealed Himself to us in His Word and in His creation (Romans 1:20).

How will you respond?

    1. Hi Mitchell,
I don’t want to post it on my blog for the sake of all of our privacy, but you do have it. It is on the bottom page of the “Welcome to the Class” handout that I gave to you on Friday 🙂

  1. I decided to look at the stories under Africa, and this one was my favorite!

    Kikuyu (Kenya):
A beautiful but mysterious woman agreed to marry a man on the condition that he never ask about her family. He agreed, and they lived happily together until it was time for their oldest son’s circumcision, and the man asked his wife why her family couldn’t attend the ceremony. With that, the wife bounced into the air and made a hole seven miles deep when she landed. She called upon her ancestors, who came as spirits from Mt. Kenya. The spirits raised a thunder and hailstorm as they came. They brought food, goats, cattle, and beer with them and, while the people took shelter in caves, flooded the countryside with beer, turning it into a lake. When the spirits left, they took the couple and their children with them into Mt. Kenya.

  2. German:
A louse and a flea were brewing beer in an eggshell. The louse fell in and burnt herself. This made the flea weep, which made the door creak, which made the broom sweep, which made the cart run, which made the ash-heap burn, which made the tree shake itself, which made the girl break her water-pitcher, which made the spring begin to flow. And in the spring’s water everything was drowned.

I also like the Greek one, but I think I find this story a bit more interesting.

  3. The story that tripped me out the most was the Hopi Indian story. I always knew the Hopi Indians were a special tribe, but I never really understood fully until now. This knowledge was given to me by Sotuknang, the creator, through the door in my head.

  4. Scandinavian:
Oden, Vili, and Ve fought and slew the great ice giant Ymir, and icy water from his wounds drowned most of the Rime Giants. The giant Bergelmir escaped, with his wife and children, on a boat made from a hollowed tree trunk. From them rose the race of frost ogres. Ymir’s body became the world we live on. His blood became the oceans. [Sturluson, p. 35]

This one tripped me out the most because we are living on Ymir’s body and people surf in his blood.
