Week 25–To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Good morning. Sorry that this is late. I started working on your assignments on Friday, but I got caught up in a bunch of potential projects for this book and I forgot to just post your assignments for this week!!!

First I want you to watch this short biography on Harper Lee:

Biography: Harper Lee

My plan is to park here for a bit. We have been rushing and rushing to cover so much material. We did The Old Man and the Sea in one week. We didn’t have time to get into it and write about it, so I want to look at the next month as a sort of pause from moving so fast in this class. I am going to give you a few projects and an essay. Then after that is over, we will finish the last month with some modern poetry and short stories and another formal persuasive essay on a hot button cultural issue, complete with an oral presentation and a persuasive business letter. So that is the plan. As your teacher I got to get my head around where we are, where I want us to be, and where I want us to go. So that is it.

I would like to throw in some sort of Hemingway project this week. Creative. I have an idea, but I will post it later. I also want us to get back into our journal writing, like crazy. And I need to get caught up with all the grading.

Why am I venting to you? LOL

Also, this week I would like to see if your parents would be interested in seeing To Kill a Mockingbird at the LifeHouse Theater in Redlands. It looks like the general admission tickets are $19.00 each. Let me know if you are interested, and if you would like to carpool, or if your parents would like to go too. It is not mandatory at all. I just think it is a good opportunity and you would love it. I am going to call the Theater tomorrow because they do have special group pricing. We might be able to get the prices down. But before I do that, I do need to check with Gary and make sure that he is okay with this idea. So right now, it is just tentative. But see if your parents would be interested. I would like to go this Thursday evening, but you can go Friday evening, Saturday at 2:30, or at 7:30, and Sunday too.

The Book

We are going to read it. You don’t need the hard copy, but feel free to go to the library and pick it up if you like. I am going to just link the pdf of the book here.

This week I need you to read the first 100 pages. Go ahead and stop when you get to Chapter 11 (pg 102).

To Kill a Mockingbird (pdf)

If you want to follow along with the audiobook (youtube)

This book is soooooo good. You will really enjoy it, and it may become the favorite book you have read this year 🙂

Some of you have already read this book. Please read it again.

Assignments:

1. Since you can’t take “Brandi Notes” in the book, I would like you to take notes on a piece of paper of at least five important quotes. Then underneath each quote explain to me WHY you think this quote is important to the book.

2. I would like you to do some character analysis. As you read the first five chapters of the book I want you to observe Atticus, Scout, Jem, and Dill. For each character please devote an entire page where you chart the following characteristics:

You may want to fold your paper so that it has four boxes. In each box write the titles below. Then fill in the boxes as you read, with the information that you learn about each person. Please leave a page number next to each example.

  • Box one–Characteristics or Qualities (that describe his/her personality)
  • Box two–Talents and Physical Attributes
  • Box three–Feelings and Emotions that are demonstrated by the person
  • Box four–his/her Values or Ethical Principles.

Remember, you should have 4 pages. One page for each character. Each page should have four boxes. Does that make sense?

3. Justice is a theme in To Kill a Mockingbird. I want you to find two verses from the Bible that have to do with justice and leave them in the comment section below. BUT you cannot use a verse that was already posted. Let’s make the biggest list of verses about justice!!! Our God loves it!!! He is just and good, and everything He does is right. His people should be just, and love justice too. (10 points)

4. I am also going to assign you The Old Man and the Sea Project (Due April 3)

What I would like you to do is make a map of his journey. It should be in color. It must be larger than a piece of notebook paper. It has to show Cuba, Florida, the Atlantic Ocean, but I also want you to put some creative labels on it.

It isn’t just a physical journey, it was an emotional journey.

Can you put some creative labels on it:

Beyond just day one and day two and day three.

Maybe, “Where the Marlin began to circle” or “Where Santiago fought the sharks” and even “Where Santiago blacked out” or “the final battle” — Stuff like that.

I want to see it visually and emotionally connected. He went far out to sea. He was all alone.

You can even add quotes, or draw sharks or make it look old fashioned and nautical.

You can even make it 3 dimensional, like a diorama

However you want to do it.

But I want it to look nice, to show that you understood the importance of this incident in Santiago’s life, and that you understand the themes of the book.

Find some way to depict this journey, and the theme of the book, artistically through a map.

4.) You also have journals this week 🙂

Anyways, Have a Good Week!

Let me know if you have any questions.

And leave me a comment below if you are interested in seeing the play this week.

  1. Proverbs 21:15 “It is a joy for the just to do justice, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.”

Amos 5:24 “But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream.”

  2. Romans 12:19
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

    Psalm 106:3
“Blessed are those who keep justice, And he who does righteousness at all times!”

  3. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.-Proverbs 28:5

He has shown you, oh man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.-Micah 6:8

  4. – JUSTICE –
“Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.” (Proverbs 28:5)
Those of this world, whom seek blood spill or seek earthly qualities and look not to GOD, and those whom have no desire to do what is right will never understand justice in the least, for justice is brought forth out of the desire to do what is right. However, those whom seek the LORD’s demands will understand justice.

“When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” (Proverbs 21:15)
Justice will always be “the right thing done”. Justice has no other terms by which it is pursued, nor can it be used for evil. “The right thing done” is the will of GOD, and the will of GOD cannot be used for evil.

“The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.” (John 3:24.) The commands of GOD (ex. ‘You will not murder’, ‘You will not make idols’, ‘You will not use GOD’s name in vain’, etc.) are to be kept in the heart of a believer, or anyone just. GOD’s commands are “the right thing done”, thus making HIS commands full of justice and what is right.

    – SUMMARY –
This world will never understand justice, nor will they seek it fully. Those who seek the LORD will fully understand it’s meaning. This world cannot understand justice because they are considered evildoers, or are not right with GOD, and they will surely perish or be destroyed if justice is done against their not-yet-forgiven sins. The commands of GOD are to be kept in the hearts and minds of HIS followers forever because GOD’s commands are the true definition of justice.

    1. “Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off; the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.” (Psalm 37:27-29)

  5. I ordered the book from the library but I don’t know when they will get it in stock. It’s good and bad, good because I will be able to catch up missed reading while I was sick from The Old Man and The Sea as well as the questions. And Bad because I think I will be one week behind.. :/ Any suggestions, Mrs.Brandi, for what I should do?

    1. I know I’m not Mrs. Brandi, but I desperately want to help you, friend! ❤ I'd suggest you read Old Man and The Sea this week, then just catch up next week. I'm not too sure what Mrs. Bee (Hehe cute nick-name, huh?) would have you do, but I believe that's what works most efficiently. And, whatever you do, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! ~ Hoo!

  6. I’m so glad my mom decided to buy How to Kill a Mockingbird at a book sale two years ago. I can read it where ever I go! Thank you mommy 😀

  7. This is one of my favorite books (Ive read it five times) so excited!!!!! Ive read it with an English class before, but under a public school shadow. Looking forward to doing it in Mrs. Brandi’s class because she’s a great teacher:)! ❤ ❤ ❤

  8. Whoops, I was logged on my wordpress account, that’s why my comment was waiting for moderation.

“Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.” Leviticus 19:15

“Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 16:20)

  9. Mrs. Brandi, are we able to just draw multiple pictures (with color of course), and put them in a bundle, and turn it in that way for the The Old Man and the Sea Project?

  10. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He. -Deut 32:4

    Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Mercy and truth go before Your face. -Ps 89:14

  11. Yay! So we are going to see To Kill a Mockingbird tomorrow. 🙂

Here are the people going–Mrs. Kim, Tristan, Kayley, Samantha, Lilly, and Kelly.

I am bummed that the others cannot come 😦 We will miss you guys!!! But I totally understand that this was last minute.

But I am excited to spend time with the rest of you!!!

Please let your parents know that there will be the same words that are in the book. FYI–Like on page 7 I think were a couple and there are bad people that say bad things. But it is a Christian theater, so they won’t embellish it or be insensitive.

  12. “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.” Proverbs 29:7
“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8
