2 weeks!!!

How Are You?

Let’s hand in our homework!

  • Scarlet Letter Essay
  • Sermon Compare/Contrast Paragraphs
  • Tree Map and Thesis Statement
  • Persuasive Essay Rough Draft

The Scarlet Letter Essay Topics

1.) Is Hester Prynne a strong female character? Is The Scarlet Letter a protofeminist novel? Which simply means, does the novel have any PRE-feminist concepts? In a positive way though, not the negative angry feminism that we have today. Had Hester not been a woman, would she have received the same punishment? Discuss some ways that Hester shows her strength, independence, and goes beyond the “stereotypical woman” of the Puritan era.

2.) How does Hawthorne show the difference between true Christianity and false Christianity? What character shows true conviction, confession and repentance during the novel? Which characters are fake/hurtful/hypocritical? And which characters rely on just being “good people” as if that is enough? Discuss the correct way to connect to God and how we see that happen in this novel.

3.) The Bible says that the devil is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). Jesus said in John 16:8, that conviction of sin is from the Holy Spirit and we know that condemnation is from the devil. Conviction is when the Holy Spirit draws us lovingly to repentance. Condemnation is when the enemy shouts at us that we are losers, God hates us, and we need to give up, run away, and hide like Adam and Eve did.  In what ways does Chillingworth symbolize the devil in this book. Give some examples of actions and words that remind you of how the devil treats God’s people when they fall short. Include a Bible verse to prove your point.
